The Russia based Inter RAO UES is managing the Mestamor nuclear power plant which has received $130m in funding from US, the European Union, Russia to upgrade the plant’s safety.

The parties have planned to begin construction work in this year and the proposed unit is expected to be commissioned before 2017.

The Russian ministry of energy also said the existing operating unit will be closed when the new unit starts operations.

The Russian-Armenian intergovernmental commission will collect information inlcuding seismic activity at the site to assess the possible environmental impact of the new unit.
