The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) has awarded Motorola a US$881,351 contract to replace and upgrade the radio communication system for its Colorado-Big Thompson and Fryingpan-Arkansas water diversion and delivery projects.

The projects include 21 dams and seven hydro power plants managed by the USBR Eastern Colorado area office in Loveland. The upgrade project will enable USBR employees to utilise the state-wide public safety communication system, if necessary.

Equipment purchased from Motorola includes 800MHZ, narrow-band, hand-held radios as well as mobile and base units. The upgrade was necessitated by a US federal law requiring all existing VHF radio systems to be narrow banded by 2005.
