The Department of Energy in the Philippines is pushing the development of new and renewable energy, with a particular focus on hydro power.
The government hopes to attract investors who could put in the estimated US$1.4B worth of capital to develop the untapped hydro resources for power generation.
The energy department projected that the country’s hydro power potential could generate as much as 13,426MW of electricity. Over the next ten years, some 1300MW of large and mini hydro projects, or approximately another 10%of the country’s hydro potential, is projected to be added and connected to the main and small island grids.
To date, the country has a total of 2521MW of installed capacity from hydro power, or 19% of total installed generating capacity.
