A transmission project linking Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland has been officially inaugurated in Maputo, Mozambique. The transmission line is owned and operated by Motraco, a NEW company set up by the public power companies of the three countries involved in the project.

The scheme has helped contribute to Mozambique’s recovery by supplying electricity to the 250 000 t/year aluminium smelter near Maputo. It has also improved the efficiency of the electrical supply in Swaziland.

Motraco was financed jointly by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the European Investment Bank. Each provided 50% of the debt financing for the scheme, a total of nearly $38 million. The project is being hailed a potential model for development in other parts of Africa.
