Dutch energy company Nuon is to start selling gas to households in Hamburg and Berlin. Nuon is already supplying electricity to 30,000 retail customers in Berlin and 20,000 in Heinsberg.

Hamburg has 1 million households, Berlin almost 2 million, and the Dutch company says that by supplying gas in Hamburg and Berlin, Nuon aims to offer more choice to German domestic consumers. The company says it has the support of the German regulatory body, which advocates greater freedom of choice in the gas and electricity market.

Now that we are entering the domestic gas market, we would like to work constructively with German energy companies to set up the structures and processes required for a truly free energy market, says Thomas Mecke, director of Nuon Germany. In the end German consumers will feel the beneficial effect on energy prices if there is sufficient choice and fair, uniform and clear rules.

The price of NuonGas in Hamburg and Berlin is in principle below the level of the standard product of the market leader in the two cities. Customers that take up the offer before the end of July will also get a discount of E50.
