Higher than normal precipi-tation has enabled Norway’s hydro reservoirs to generate a record electricity output and boost power exports in 2000. Norway produces most of its electricity from hydro power plants and production in September 2000 was a record 11.2TWh, an increase of over 25% compared with the same month in 1999.

Norway exports surplus electricity to Sweden, Denmark and to other parts of Europe but is generally a net importer of electricity, producing about 115TWh of electricity in a year with normal water inflows, and consuming around 125TWh.
