Water Ministers from nine Nile Basin states that form the Nile Council, have approved the development of hydro projects at a meeting held in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, in March. Funding for the projects is to be sought from the International Consortium for Co-operation on the Nile (ICCON).

ICCON, led by the World Bank, includes other donors such as the Canadian International Development Agency and the United Nations Development Programme. These bodies are expected to examine the projects at a meeting in Geneva next June.

The projects include hydroelectric schemes in Berbera, Bara, Giad, Ukomo and Krajoy in Ethiopia; similar power projects in Hamdab, Upper Atbara River, Kajbar and Seteit in Sudan; and water supply dams in Tana, Debousa and Hamra in Ethiopia.
