US-based Newfield Exploration discovered natural gas on the Block SK 310 Production Sharing Contract (PSC) area, located 50 miles offshore Sarawak in Malaysia.

Gas was found in B-14 well, located on Block SK 310 about 250ft of water, marking Newfield’s second pinnacle reef natural gas discovery in the region.

During drilling, the B-14 well encountered 1,800ft of gross column and 1,585ft of net natural gas pay in the main carbonate objective.

Prior to moving ahead with exploration, Newfield conducted a drill stem test to confirm commercial viability of the reservoir.

Newfield operates Block SK 310 with a 30% interest and estimates Gas Initially In Place (GIIP) between 1.5 – 3.0 trillion cubic feet.

Mitsubishi’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Partners Diamond Energy Sarawak holds 30% stake, while PETRONAS Carigali owns 40% interest in the block.

The well, which is located less than three miles from Newfield’s first pinnacle reef gas discovery B-15, is expected to contain recoverable reserves of about 265 billion cubic feet.
