Matrix North American Construction has been awarded a contract by TransCanada subsidiary TransCanada Energy for the development of the 900MW Napanee Generating Station (NGS).

The combined cycle gas-fuelled power generation station will be built in the town of Greater Napanee adjacent to the Ontario Power Generation’s Lennox Generating Station in eastern Ontario, Canada.

Matrix Service Company CEO John Hewitt said: "This significant project award is a key strategic milestone for Matrix Service Company and demonstrates the depth and breadth of our relationship with TransCanada and the trust TransCanada places in Matrix to meet exacting standards of safety and quality in completing their critical infrastructure projects."

Construction work on the facility is scheduled to commence in February 2015.

NGS will feature new generating and environmental controls technology and will ensure greater reliability of Ontario’s electrical system.

TransCanada Energy president and executive vice-president William Taylor said: "The facility will be a critical piece of Ontario’s power system, with the capacity to supply enough power for approximately 900,000 homes. Selecting our general contractor is an important milestone for this project and we look forward to working with Matrix throughout the construction of the facility."
