Manitoba Hydro of Canada has announced that it is joining the Midwest ISO, enabling it to access the US wholesale power market.

The agreement marks the first international extension of a US-based ISO. Manitoba Hydro, a provincially owned utility, with some 5,200MW of mostly hydroelectric power generation, provides energy to all of the province of Manitoba, except central Winnipeg.

Manitoba Hydro typically exports surplus hydroelectricity to US utilities during the spring and summer, and imports power from mostly coal-fired Midwest US power generators during the winter months.
