Pakistan is proceeding with the US$1.4B Mangla dam upraising project (MDUP) with initial surveys and preliminary work commencing this May.

The rehabilitation of those affected by the project will also commence, with the carving out of a new model city and four towns. On completion, the MDUP will increase the supply of irrigation water in various parts of Pakistan, particularly in Punjab and Sindh provinces.

The raising of the existing dam by 9.1m will boost power generation as well as provide increased flood protection. Annual water availability will increase by some 3.6Bm3.
