Japan’s Atomic Energy Research Institute has completed the construction of a large, 180 tonne, superconducting coil that will act as a prototype for the solenoid coil used in the International Thermonuclear Experi-mental Reactor, Nikkei Weekly reports. The solenoid coil is designed to induce a current in the magnetically constricted plasma that will promote fusion events. The fusion reactor programme is a joint venture between Japan, Europe and Russia.
