The new EV charging unit has the potential to charge a vehicle battery to 80% of full capacity in less than 30 minutes, compared to about four hours in a Level 2 charging system, the company said.

Commenting on the installation, ABB New Berlin EV Charging Infrastructure operations manager Andy Bartosh said that by installing ABB’s quick charging unit along Interstate 90/94, MGE has taken a major step toward giving EV drivers an opportunity to travel greater distances more conveniently.

MGE noted that it is conducting a multiyear study on charging equipment and EV drivers’ needs and preferences in order to support the energy needs of EV use and its effects on the electric grid.

This project has been partially funded by a US Department of Energy stimulus grant.

Currently, MGE has approximately 26 Level 1 and 2 EV charging stations located throughout Dane County.
