First A$738m ($758m) contract includes a three and a half year contract extension for offering mining services at the Sonoma Mine.

The contract entails project management including site statutory obligations, fleet maintenance and operational services for coal and overburden mining.

QCoal has awarded another contract for the Jax coal bulk sample project in northern Bowen Basin.

The contract encompasses construction of the mine industrial area, mining operations, management, mining fleet and services supply for the bulk sample project including drill and blast for mining of overburden and coal.

Leighton unit will also supply and operate temporary facilities for coal crushing and screening as part of the deal.

Leighton Holdings Coal general manager Greg Fokes said the company’s relationship with QCoal dated back to 2007 with the development of the greenfield Sonoma Mine.

"Securing the contract at Jax marks another important milestone in the business relationship," Fokes added.

The project will initially extract about 350,000 tons of coal samples for testing from the site during 2012 in the Asian steel markets.

Following approval of the state government for the Jax mine by the end of 2012, the contract will be extended for a proposed production of about 1.8 million tons per annum of raw coal for a period of five years, valuing the contract at A$430m ($441m).
