Japan-based electricity wholesaler Electric Power Development, also known as J-Power, commenced its work on a gas-fired thermal power station in southern California in order to increase its business in the US.

According to the company, the construction of the natural gas-fired power plant began on July 20, 2009, dubbed the Orange Grove Energy plant, with its commercial operations scheduled in January 2010. The plant is 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of San Diego. The company did not disclose the investment value of the project which is its tenth power porject in the US.

The compnay is increasing its investment in the overseas power projects. The company owns interest in nine other power stations in the US, which is one of its major overseas markets apart from China and Thailand.

The company stated that the electricity produced at the 95MW gas power station would be marketed for a period of 25 years to local power company San Diego Gas & Electric.
