As part of the contract Itron will install its OpenWay Riva IoT solution along with 55,000 Intelis ultrasonic water meters in the water distribution system. This system is claimed to be the first-of-its-kind smart water network in Australia which can reduce excessive wastage of water.

CRC says that it will give its customers access to the Itron’s data, which can help them know about their water usage, while also detecting any leakages. This can help consumers in reducing unnecessary water wastage and can inculcate water conservation.

According to Itron, by combining accurate, robust metering technology and high-performance network can help unlock new capabilities for the Cairns Regional Council. Itron’s OpenWay Riva solution features a unified, secure and multi-purpose network for smart water applications. The system can allow for smart water meters, network devices and distributed assets can communicate and interact throughout the network.

Itron Asia-Pacific Water and Heat vice president Dominique Lerouge said: “Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution will give the Cairns Regional Council access to new capabilities for water efficiency while providing the foundation for future smart city applications.

“With cutting-edge static metering technology and a multi-purpose network, the possibilities are nearly endless for enhanced reliability, reduced water losses and improved customer service and engagement.”

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Cr Bob Manning said: “Water is our most valuable resource and the council is committed to reducing wastage at every point of delivery. Itron has the global experience and technology to help us meet this goal.

“We look forward to benefiting from Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution, which will give us the foundation to better manage our water resources and make a positive step toward our longer-term water security.”
