Fahmi reported that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program has been removed and Baghdad is cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency to dispose of nuclear waste and remove all remaining nuclear facilities and components.

Iraqi scientists who are previously involved in Hussein’s nuclear program will be employed to train technical personnel, Fahmi said.

Fahmi said that Iraq was one of the first Middle east country to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and establishing a national atomic agency in late 1950.

A nuclear reactor constructed with French support in south of Baghdad was destroyed by Israeli warplanes in 1981.
