Officials studying the proposed Churchill hydroelectric project are now looking at diverting only one Québec river instead of two.

Officials are considering upgrading the existing generating system at Churchill Falls, instead of adding two new underground generators. The new option would mean lower construction costs, but less capacity when complete.

It is possible that only the Romaine River would be diverted, and not the Saint-Jean River, which is considered to be one of the top three salmon rivers on Québec’s north shore.
