Hitachi of Japan has started work with an international consortium on a large pumping facility for Egypt’s Ministry of Public Works and Water Resources.

Hitachi was successful in jointly winning the contract, which is worth about Yen57B, with British and Egyptian partners.

The consortium will build a control station and will install 21 large pumps at the reservoir behind Aswan high dam for use in a government funded desert forestation project. Each pump can move about 16.7m3/sec of water.

The companies will also use their combined expertise to design and build a 4km waterway. The consortium expects to complete the work by 2002.
