Consent for the construction of an 800 MW combined cycle gas turbine power station at Uskmouth, Newport, South Wales has been granted by the UK government. Ministers have included a condition to ensure that carbon capture technology can be retrofitted should that be necessary in the future, along with the necessary plant and pipeworks to ensure that the station can supply heat in the future if the opportunity materialises. The plant, which is under development by Severn Power, is expected to cost some £400 million and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2010. Severn is owned by Carron Energy, which took over the coal-fired Uskmouth power station in 2004.
