Salini Costruttori group has awarded a contract worth approximately US$80M to Voith Siemens Hydro for the Gilgel Gibe II hydro power project in south central Ethiopia.

Voith Siemens Hydro will supply the plant with four vertical, six-jet Pelton turbines, each with a rated output of 105MW at a net head of 487m. In addition, the company will provide frequency controls, pressure oil supply systems, inlet valves, and the four generators, rated at 125MVA per unit. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2007.

The scope of supply covers all electrical accessories such as bus bars, protection control and monitoring systems, a station service power supply system, overhead lines, ventilation and air conditioning systems, firefighting and telecommunication systems and power transformers as well as a 400kV switchyard.
