The new El Canadá power station, featuring equipment supplied and installed by GE Energy, is now in operation at Municipalidad de Zunil, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

Solel Boneh Guatemala, Sociedad Anonima, a construction company based in Guatemala City, awarded GE a contract of nearly US$10M to supply equipment and services for the 44MW hydro plant. GE installed and commissioned all the equipment in only five months, including a 15-day trial run, ensuring that the project was completed on schedule.

GE supplied a complete power station with two substations and 4km long overhead transmission lines. The plant consists of two 22MW Pelton turbines, two synchronous generators, main inlet valves, turbine governors, excitation system, cooling water system, SCADA system and 13.8/69kV transformers. The plant owner/operator is Generadora del Occidente, SA, a subsidiary of ENEL Latin America LLC.

The equipment for the project was manufactured in Spain, Bulgaria, Norway, China and Brazil.
