The 10MW wind farm, which is the joint venture’s second project in Turkey, started generating electricity on 4 July 2012 using four 2.5MW GE turbines.
Using nine 2.5-megawatt GE turbines, GAMA Enerji’s other project, the 22.5-megawatt Sares wind farm, commenced commercial operations in March 2011.
The projects were built as part of GE’s ecomagination initiative and its effort to increase renewable energy in Turkey.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in Turkey approved the commercial operation of the Karadag wind farm, in a bid to meet Turkey’s goal of generating 30% of its energy from renewables by 2023.
According to GAMA Enerji, the Karadag and Sares wind farms will generate enough electricity to power 59,000 average Turkish homes and avoid 80,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
GAMA Enerji is the operator of the two wind farms, while GE Energy is responsible for maintenance of the wind farms under a services agreement.
