Fugro has secured a contract from SA Power Networks to install undersea power cable in Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
The expiring 10000 kVA/33,000 Volt undersea cable will be replaced by the new 20000 kVA/33,000 Volt cable.
The new 15km long subsea cable, designed and supplied by Fugro, weighs 600 tonnes and links the distribution network on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide, to the Kangaroo Island.
Fugro will use REM Etive, its multi role support vessel, to set up the power cable across Backstairs Passage, from Fishery Beach on the mainland to Cuttlefish Bay on Kangaroo Island.
Fugro business development manager Fugro said: “As a multi-disciplinary project delivery and subsea services provider, we operate high specification vessels and remotely operated technology, enabling Fugro to deliver turnkey solutions like this one.
“After installation of the cable our specialist team will also carry out commissioning and associated termination and connection works.”
SA Power Networks stakeholder relations manager Paul Roberts said: “They are scheduled to commence during the last quarter of 2017 and we expect operations to take a couple of weeks. The new cable is expected to be operational by the middle of 2018.”
Kangaroo Island, having a population of 4500, is situated 15km off Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and is claimed to be the third largest island off the coast of Australia.
Fugro, founded in 1962 and headquartered in Netherlands, has over 10000 employees and provides services to oil and gas, the mining and the construction sectors.
