Finnish energy firm Fortum has announced that 89% of its generated electricity was free of CO2 emissions and that renewables accounted for 40% of the electricity generated in 2007.

Fortum stated that CO2 emissions from its own power plants totaled 10.4 million tonnes, around 5% lower than the previous year.

The specific CO2 emissions of the company’s total electricity generation, including wholly and partly-owned power generation, was 64g/kWh, which Fortum claims, is among the lowest of the major European power companies.

Fortum noted that, in the EU25 area, the average specific emission from power plants has been around 400g/kWh during recent years.

Fortum Markets is a seller of eco-labeled electricity in the Nordic countries. Over 60% of Fortum Markets’s customers, around 700,000, reportedly buy eco-labeled electricity.
