US-based solar module manufacturer First Solar has entered into an agreement to sell three solar photovoltaic facilities to be built in Ontario to a consortium of Plutonic Power and GE Energy Financial Services.

Plutonic Power will serve as the managing partner of the solar plants, which will have a total power generating capacity of 50MW.

First Solar will continue developing the facilities and will provide engineering, procurement and construction services.

The company will also provide operations and maintenance services for the power plants under long-term contracts.

Construction of the plants is expected to begin by mid-2011 and power generated from the facilities will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority under 20-year energy purchase agreements.

The facilities are expected to collectively produce enough clean electricity to power approximately 6,300 homes and avoid 14,600 tons of carbon dioxide a year.
