Determination of a relationship between the rock characteristics (eg. rock discontinuities such as joints and cracks or rock quality indices) has an important role in the studies of the dam support. The relation can clarify the estimation of the cost and the volume of the grouting works in the study phases of the dam projects, which is presented on the investigations on the rock support of the Marvak dam case study.
Due to the high permeability of the rocks, five boreholes have been made as well as grouting tests. An investigation on the results obtained from the boreholes show that according to rock quality index the right support can be classified as good (RQD = 75-90). Also, according to geomechanical classification, the rock mass can be considered as good with RMR = 61-80.
The obtained results show that there is a correlation between one part RQD and RMR and the other part permeability (or grout consumption). However, the correlation between RMR and permeability is much closer as well as being more significant than that of RQD and permeability.
