Thousands of people have been evacuated from the Gawadar district in Balochistan province, Pakistan, after heavy rains caused the Aakra Kor dam to breach, according to reports in Pakistan’s Daily Times.

At least five villages surrounding that dam have been washed away, said a government spokesperson, adding that the area’s 5000 population had been transported to safer places.

Seasonal rivers were in high flow and small check dams were overflowing following two days of torrential rain in the area, with flash flooding severing communication links across the Gawadar district.

A further two days of rain is expected.
