IN MEMORY OF FORMER US BUREAU of Reclamation official, Thaddeus W Mermel, the T W Mermel Memorial Engineering Scholarship Fund has been established at the School of Engineering, University of Wyoming, US.

Mermel, who sadly passed away in October 2000 after battling chronic leukemia, was a member of several professional engineering societies including the American Society of Civil Engineers and icold, where he served as a chairman of the Committee on the World Registry of Dams. He published many professional papers and was the original author of the Register of Dams in the US.

Representing the Bureau of Reclamation, he travelled worldwide participating in bilateral technical exchanges and visiting large dams and hydroelectric projects to gather technical ideas. He shared this information with Reclamation engineers and others throughout the industry at technical meetings and conferences, as well as making editorial contributions to various industry publications, including IWP&DC.

The scholarship fund has been set up in memory of Mermel’s strong commitment to the engineering profession and his dedication to formal education as the best means for self-advancement. Those who wish to contribute should contact Brenda Bland, Director for Development, University of Wyoming, PO Box 3295, Laramie, Wyoming 82071, US.
