The project, owned by Energinet.dk and 50Hertz, will connect the 600MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in Denmark with the 200MW Baltic 2 wind farm in Germany, both situated in the Baltic Sea.

nkt cables has in turn awarded the contract to VBMS for the installation of about 50 km of 150 kV AC high-voltage submarine cables for the Kriegers Flak CGS.

The manufacturing of offshore cables will take place in Cologne, Germany, and they will be put into operation by the end of 2018.

nkt cables said the order is the third offshore wind farm contract that it secured in 2016. The other two orders include Hornsea and Borssele Alpha.

The Kriegers Flak and Baltic 2 wind farms are located less than 25km to each other and will be connected using two AC submarine cables delivered by nkt cables.

As per the plan, Danish region of Sjaelland and German Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be connected and about 400MW of energy will be transferred.

The value of the contract awarded to nkt cables is €42m. The cable laying work is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2108.

nkt cables CEO Michael Hedegaard Lyng said: "The award of another contract for an offshore wind farm project from some of our most experienced offshore customers Energinet.dk and 50Hertz underlines our position as a key player in this industry and as a strong and reliable partner.

“Furthermore, this order gives us full visibility of our AC offshore production in Cologne until 2018.”
