Spanish power giant Endesa has brought the new Aitona mini hydro plant located in the province of Lérida on stream.

The plant has installed capacity of 4.9 MW and uses water discharged into the Segre river from the Seròs II hydro plant, also owned by Endesa, along the final stretch of the Catarralà ravine. The plant is included in the Seròs hidro complex that in the past was the origin of Utxesa reservoir.

The plant comprises two identical 2.45 MW semi-Kaplan turbines which permit a flow of up to 60 m3 per second each, with a drop of 4.72 m.

Average production capacity is estimated at an annual 14.3 GWh

Total investment in this new mini hydro plant amounts to around €6.5 million.
