In July, the first steps of the demolition of the Edwards Dam were taken. On 1 July, a gap was made in the 162 year old dam as the first stage of dismantling the dam in the name of river conservation.

The removal of the hydroelectric dam opens an upstream stretch of the Kennebec River to Atlantic salmon, striped bass, and shortnosed sturgeon. The dam is the first in the USA to be forcibly removed under an environmental policy that is attempting to balance power needs and environmental protection.
