French utility major EDF and the government of Qatar have signed a protocol agreement for co-operation in the fields of nuclear power and renewable energy.

Under the agreement, EDF will participate in Qatar’s discussions on the use of civil nuclear power and the development of renewable energy sources, with particular reference to solar energy, through its subsidiary, EDF Energies Nouvelles.

In the gas sector, EDF and Qatar Petroleum International envisage, in particular, the acquisition of joint interests in gas projects in Europe.

EDF currently has dealings with Qatar primarily through two of its subsidiaries. They are EDF’s primary gas entity, Italian utility Edison, and EDF Trading, a trading subsidiary based in London.
