German energy giant E.ON has submitted a planning application to the UK government for the construction of a 300MW wind farm off the northeast coast of England.

E.ON claims that the new wind farm will help to meet the UK’s targets on climate change and has urged the government to approve the plans quickly. If approved, the Humber Gateway wind farm will be one of the largest UK offshore wind farms, providing electricity to almost 200,000 homes.

However, there have been objections to the plans from the Ministry of Defense (MoD) over concerns about the potential effects on defense systems.

In a statement, E.ON has said that it is working with the MoD to resolve any issues, although the company did point out that the MoD raised no objections during the initial consultation on the project in 2004.

The UK government has set a target of producing over 15% of the country’s energy from renewable sources by 2020.
