The plant shut down in response to an electrical disturbance in equipment that helps transfer power to the state power grid, reported santamariatimes.com.

The disturbance was caused by a ‘flashover’ on a lightning arrestor located on the non-nuclear side of the plant, a spokesman for Pacific Gas and Electric said.

The flashover happened during routine pressure washing, known as ‘hot washing’ of electrical insulators near the lightning arrestor.

Unit 1 was unaffected by the shutdown and continued to generate power.

After the lightning arrestor was repaired, Unit 2 began feeding electricity into the state power grid on 14 July and was ramped up to 100% power the morning of 16 July.
