A range of new flood defences stood firm last week helping to save just under US$37M in damage during floods along the Severn river, UK.
The towns of Shrewsbury and Bewdley were protected by new demountable defences costing a total of US$18.5M and consisting of underground flood walls topped by German removable aluminium barriers, which are secured to steel plates when flooding is anticipated. According to the Environment Agency, work is to begin next month on the construction of similar flood defences along Severnside South.
Meanwhile, a series of Swedish temporary defences, erected along the ground and made up of metal frames covered by a waterproof membrane were used to protect properties in the towns of Ironbridge and Worcester.
