Dong Energy has awarded a contract to CWind to provide crew transfer services for the 172MW Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm off the coast of Essex, UK.

Under the three-year contract, CWind will use Challenger vessel to transfer technicians and equipment to the wind farm during operations and maintenance work.

CWind plans to operate the vessel from Brightlingsea in Essex.

Dong Energy head of operations Gunfleet Sands Thomas Engmose said: "CWind’s vessels have proven successful at Dong Energy sites on several occasions in the past and their capabilities continue to match our demands.

"We are keen to have strong local content but from an operations point of view technician safety and comfort, availability on contract and outstanding fleet management are central. Fortunately for us, CWind satisfies on all of those counts."

The contract has an option to extend for a further two years.

Located approximately 7km south-east of Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, UK, the Gunfleet Sands project is 50.1% owned by DONG Energy while Marubeni owns the remaining stake.

The project, which has been developed in two phases, generates electricity to power 125,000 homes, which is approximately 90% of households in the Tendring district and Colchester.
