On August 2, 2017, CGGC, subsidiary of Energy China and Sarawak Energy jointly held the contract signing ceremony for Baleh Hydroelectric Project in Kuching, marking an important breakthrough for Energy China in the area of energy collaboration in Malaysia.
It has not only brought new momentum for the Belt and Road development, but will also continue to write a new chapter in the China-Malaysia friendship.
The Baleh hydroelectric project, 95 km upriver from Kapit, will be Sarawak Energy’s biggest, producing 1,285 MW of power from a 5,625 square km catchment area, harnessed through a 588 square km reservoir impounded by a 188 m high concrete faced rockfill dam.
The project is planned to be kicked off in August of this year and is the major part of SCORE Plan in Sarawak State. After its completion, there will be 1285MW of renewable energy added to Malaysia’s total installed capacity, providing sufficient electricity supply to the local community, thus promoting the social and economic development. During the peak of the construction period, about 3500 jobs will be created for the local staff; meanwhile, a large number of power technicians with expertise and management skills will be trained.
