Ukraine has produced a 5-year plan to develop the ‘exclusion zone’, an area about 20 miles radius around the Chernobyl nuclear plant. The plan will be implemented from 2001 to 2005, to protect the health of the local people, reinforce anti-radiation facilities, reduce radiation in the area and rebuild the local economy. The programme will cost $1.3 million for 2000, and is based on scientific work carried out by the European Union.
