The power plant was manually shut down early last week after the loss of off-site power to control and alarm electrical circuits, Syracuse.com reports.

The power supply loss impacted the flow of cooling to both of the plant’s reactor recirculation pumps, prompting the operators to manually scram the reactor, WRVO Public Media cited US Nuclear Regulatory Commission public affairs officer Neil Sheehan as saying after the plant shut down.

The two-unit Nine Mile Point plant generates 1,360MW at full power, which is enough for about 1.4 million average households.

Both units are General Electric boiling water reactors (BWR), and went online in 1969, and 1988, respectively.
