The Callaway nuclear plant in Missouri has become the 76th nuclear plant in the US to receive a 20-year licence renewal that could allow it to operate for 60 years.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced that it has renewed the operating licence for the 1279MW plant for 20
years, until 2044.

Ameren, which owns that plant, filed an application for the licence renewal in December 2011. Last year, during a $150 million project the reactor vessel head was replaced at the plant.

Callaway is a Westinghouse pressurised water reactor that was previously licensed to operate until October 2024. Should the renewed license be
set aside on appeal it will still be able to operate for that period, NRC said.
