The Brazilian electric energy commission Agencia Nacional de Energia Eletrica (ANEEL), along with CESP, a utility based in Sao Paulo, and aluminium producer CBA, have signed a 35-year concession agreement for the completion of construction and the management of the Canoas 1 and 2 hydroelectric power plants on the Paranpanema river.

CBA won the concession at an auction held in 1996 and will invest R$104M to build the 82.5MW Canoas 1 plant and R$91M for the 72MW Canoas 2.

Canoas 1 is expected to start up in December 1999 and Canoas 2 in May 1999.
