Engineers have completed three days of acceptance tests on the Pelton turbine model for Austria’s Braz hydro power plant.

The tests were carried out in preparation for modernisation work at Braz, which will see one of the three existing horizontal Pelton twin turbines replaced with a new unit. Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation will be responsible for installing two 7.5MW runners of diameter 1867mm, increasing the unit’s generation capacity from 10MW to 15MW.

The model acceptance studies were conducted at Voith Siemens Hydro’s Brunnenmuehle technology testing facilities on behalf of the customer, Austrian National Railways’ power stations business division.

Commissioning of the new unit is expected in 2005.
