A technical alliance agreement between BP and Ergo Exergy Technologies will see the companies work cooperatively on underground coal gasification (UCG) technology.

Ergo Exergy are active in licensing their technology – in which oxygen is injected into a coal seam to produce mixtures of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and other gases – to commercial UCG projects. These gases can be recovered to the surface through wells and used as fuel for power generation or as feedstock for the production of chemicals and other hydrocarbon products.
