We are very glad we could reach this solution and though it is costly it will meet everyone’s concerns, stated Jim Atchison, general manager of Black River Cheese.
The province had initially ordered the cheese factories to abide with the new rules by December 31, 2008. The changes would stop the companies to dump wash water onto agricultural fields, a practice that is utilized for decades.
Under the Nutrient Management Act, cheese operations companies cannot spread the waste water from their production operations on farm fields in winter. These companies would have to store the water, truck it to licensed disposal sites, pipe it away or build their own treatment plants.
Black River Cheese’s new waste processing system will process over 36,000 liters of waste water per week and will be ready to commence the operations in the fall. It will enable waste grey water to be dumped directly into the Black River.
Black River Cheese is a Canada-based company.
