Hesselburg Hydro has completed a £450,000 (US$720,000) project to strengthen river defences along a 5km stretch of the southern bank of the river Ware at Breydon Water, near Great Yarmouth in the UK.

The company installed an open stone asphalt layer on a lean sand asphalt filter to protect the earth embankment in front of steel sheet piling, which provides the flood defence level for the area. Over 14,000m3 of protective layer was constructed, using some 6000t of asphalt.

Hesselburg Hydro placed an open stone protective layer further downstream on the River Ware in 1995. The design incorporated a soil-filled trench at the crest and topsoil was placed over the revetment, helping it to blend in with the environment once flora was established.
