Altergy Systems, a US-based manufacturer of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems, has shipped 1.1 megawatt (MW) of PEM uninterruptible power systems (UPS), mostly to the telecoms industry, in the fourth quarter of 2008. The 1.1 MW of fuel cell units, consists of 5 kilowatt (kW), 10 kW and 15 kW UPS units whilst working a single staggered shift at their automated Folsom production facility.

Speaking at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, senior vice president of business development, Mickey Oros, stated that the company were able to deliver an aggregate of 1.1 MW of fuel cell units, consist of 5 kW, 10 kW and 15 kW UPS units whilst working a single staggered shift at their automated Folsom production facility.

The customer for these units is the telecoms sector. Altergy Systems have been working with Eaton Corporation on installation and service of the units. Altergy Systems also has in place a collaboration with EnerSys Inc.
