French engineering group Alstom has won an electromechanical equipment contract from Emgesa, a subsidiary of power company Endesa, for a 400MW hydropower plant in Colombia.

The company will supply and assemble the equipment in consortium with Colombian assembly firm Schrader Camargo.

The El Quimbo hydropower plant consists of two 200MW units that are planned to be commissioned in late 2014.

The power project will be executed in the towns of El Agrado and Gigante, 50km from the city of Neiva and around 350km south of Bogota.

Alstom will manufacture the main equipment for the project, Francis turbines and generators, at its Taubate factory in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.
