Under the €57m contract, Alstom will provide three 200MW units including pump turbine, motor generator and other key equipment.

The 600MW Hainan Qiongzhong facility’s first unit is scheduled to enter service in December 2017.

The Hainan Qiongzhong pumped storage power station, invested by China Southern Power Grid (CSG), is an important supporting facility in terms of peak load regulation for the Hainan Changjiang nuclear station.

Alstom Hydro China general manager Fabio Nossaes said: "This contract demonstrates our customers’ confidence and trust for the quality and excellent execution capability of Alstom team, and further reinforces our leading position on the hydro pumped storage power market."

Alstom’s hydro manufacturing site in Tianjin will be responsible for the pump turbine, motor generator and balance-of-plant, as well as handling the design, delivery and installation supervision of the project.

With Alstom’s pumped storage technology, Hainan Qiongzhong pumped storage power station can respond quickly to fluctuating power demand and to manage demand peaks, Alstom claimed.
