Located in Lake Benton, Minnesota, Storm Lake, Iowa, and Condon, Oregon, the plants have power purchase agreements in place for their entire output.

ALLETE Clean Energy president Eric Norberg said, "With this acquisition, ALLETE Clean Energy will establish core infrastructure that will allow us to expand to other wind or similar clean energy projects. It’s a significant and diverse first step in the implementation of new energy-centric projects."

After the announcement of the acquisition deal in November 2013, necessary closing conditions including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval have been received.

As part of the transition, majority of the current AES employees preferred to join ALLETE Clean Energy and those skilled technical employees will be retained under the new ownership.

ALLETE Clean Energy newly appointed director of asset management Dave Leveille will be responsible for overseeing the three facilities.

In November 2013, the company has also signed an option agreement to purchase another operating wind farm – the 101MW Armenia Mountain, Pennsylvania, wind farm – from AES in mid-2015.
